The results of the Road Safety Pit Stop An Alliance Between Olympia Odos and the Road Safety Institute (RSI) "Panos Mylonas"

For the sixth consecutive year, Olympia Odos and the "Panos Mylonas" Road Safety Institute (RSI) organized a road safety Pit Stop at the Megara Motorists Service Station (MSS). The staff and volunteers from the Panos Mylonas RSI provided a brief, complimentary technical inspection of the vehicles of travelers who stopped by before heading out on their vacations.

Given that the average vehicle age is 12.5 years, the findings of the technical inspections are particularly noteworthy, as they reflect drivers' practices regarding their vehicles:

  • Tires & Lighting: At least one tire with a tread depth of less than 4 mm was found on 20% of vehicles (with one case even falling below the legal limit), despite the fact that most had recently manufactured tires (manufactured between 2023 and 2025). At the same time, malfunctions in the lights (foggy lenses or burnt-out turn signals) were recorded in four cases.
  • Safety Equipment: This is where the most significant issue was identified, as a considerable number of drivers lacked complete equipment. The most common omissions were the fire extinguisher and the reflective vest, while to a lesser extent, the first-aid kit and the warning triangle were missing.
  • Luggage in the Passenger Compartment: In nearly half of the vehicles, loose luggage was found inside the passenger compartment, which is extremely dangerous in the event of an accident. Experts recommend using the trunk exclusively.

Panayiotis Papanikolas, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Olympia Odos, made the following statement: "Behind every journey are the people we love, but road safety is always a collective effort. The Pit Stop serves as a reminder to maintain the proper condition of our vehicles, and it is important to keep in mind that “In real life there is no Undo!”.

Vasiliki Danelli-Mylona, President of the "Panos Mylonas" Road Safety Institute, has stated: “The Road Safety Pit Stop illustrates in a straightforward and pragmatic manner that prevention commences well before one even sets out on the road. Vehicle inspection, seatbelt use, proper luggage transport, and responsible driving behavior by all drivers can play a pivotal role in reducing road accidents. We would like to express our gratitude to Olympia Odos for its continuous cooperation in an initiative that focuses on the preservation of human life."

Takis Pournarakis, a journalist and mechanical engineer who was present at the event, made the following observation: The Pit Stop underscores the importance of maintaining optimal mechanical condition for our vehicles. Tires play a crucial role in our safety, as they keep us in contact with the road surface, as does maintaining proper following distances."

Our philosophy positions the driver as an active partner in the infrastructure. The strategic investments and cutting-edge technological framework of our Motorway, spanning from 2008 to the present, have resulted in a significant decrease in fatal accidents:

  • By 74% across the entire highway;
  • By 86% specifically on the Korinthos–Patras section.

Our next major challenge is to extend this safety culture to the new Patras–Pyrgos section, where there have been zero fatal accidents during the first eight months of operation.

At Olympia Odos, we are committed to establishing the conditions for a protected travel environment.
