Patras–Pyrgos fully delivered: a new chapter begins for Western Greece

  • Travel time cut to 40 minutes for Patras–Pyrgos, 2h45 for Athens–Pyrgos
  • First fully electronic tolling system in the country
  • Strong demand from day one: already 829.000 vehicles in the first section since August

The last 10 kilometers of the Patras–Pyrgos highway, between Mintilogli and Kaminia, were inaugurated today by Christos Dimas, Minister of Transport. This opening concludes the delivery of the project, following the commissioning of the first 65 kilometers last summer. With its full 277-kilometer length now open to traffic, Olympia Odos is now the third longest highway in Greece.

Delivered under the Olympia Odos concession contract, the Patras–Pyrgos section brings a decisive upgrade compared with the former National Road. The new infrastructure offers modern alignments, full separation between directions, and dual carriageways built to the latest standards. Structuring works such as bridges, overpasses, parking areas and interchanges ensure safe and fluid connections with the regional road network. Complementary upgrades – including flood protection, side roads, and connecting roads – are progressing and will be completed.

Thanks to this new section, the Patras–Pyrgos journey time is reduced by 50%, down to 40 minutes, and the Athens–Pyrgos trip takes 2h45. Beyond faster journeys, the new highway also brings a major step forward in road safety. Modern infrastructure standards, enhanced surveillance, real-time traffic management, and 24/7 roadside assistance provided by Olympia Odos’ operations teams now offer a much safer mobility for drivers in Western Greece.

Service quality also enters a new phase. Patras–Pyrgos is the first highway in Greece to operate exclusively with electronic tolls and Automatic Payment Machines, offering a faster and simpler experience for drivers. Further innovations will follow, as Olympia Odos prepares the deployment of the same technologies introduced on the Athens–Patras section, including kilometric charging, enhanced digital services, and electric vehicle charging stations.

Traffic data already confirm the strong adoption of the project. In the first three months of operation, more than 829.000 vehicles passed through, underlining the essential role of this corridor for mobility and regional development in Western Greece.
