Olympia Odos has tested in real conditions a new autonomous robot that uses artificial intelligence to carry out a range of road maintenance tasks, from detecting and sealing cracks to patching potholes, repainting lines, and supporting inspections and traffic management. The test took place as part of the European research project HERON, funded by the European Union under the Horizon 2020 program.
The robot is equipped with sensors, cameras, and AI algorithms that allow it to identify cracks, seal them, and even carry out tasks such as pothole patching or line painting. Supported by drones and machine learning, the robot can also perform visual inspections and handle safety operations like placing and removing traffic cones.
By automating these tasks, the system enhances safety for road workers and drivers, reduces traffic disruptions by speeding up repairs, and improves interventions efficiency.
Olympia Odos, as the partner of the HERON project in Greece, hosted the pilot testing under real conditions on its highway. This European project brings together partners from across several countries to explore how robotics and artificial intelligence can make road maintenance safer, quicker, and more efficient.
